DBA Mindset
12 Years years ago, I was a determined but confused professional who had big dreams and NO CLUE about how to actually make them happen.
Today – I’m the CEO of a growing company while working full time as a senior oracle DBA and love what I do.
I look back at who I was 12 years ago… in so many ways I am so very different to who I was then.
My habits and my mindset are profoundly different. This happened because I worked on changing my internal world (how I saw myself) that my external world changed.
I remember so profoundly what I used to think about myself and about how life worked and what money was…
We so often talk about success habits but we don’t always talk about the habits that bring us failure… that stop us from birthing our dreams into the world.
This course will guide you through some of the common mindset malfunctions that limit success… so you can prevent them.
In this training, you will learn:
- The bad habits I had that were blocking success & abundance(you’re probably doing these too!).
- The mistakes I made along the way.
- The essential mindset shifts that supercharged my success.
- Exactly what you need to do to supercharge yours!
We also talk about:
- The horrible productivity and time management habits I used to have.
- Who I used to blame for my lack of success.
- The attitudes and words I had to STOP using in order to manifest my dreams!

Oracle DBA Activities
What Does A DBA Do?
Oracle Database Administration Responsibilities Remember that your two main tasks are to protect and make the database available for use. Everything else tends to fall into either technical responsibilities or non-technical responsibilities and the responsibilities assigned to a particular DBA may vary on the shop. Database Technical Responsibilities
System Activities
You may come into a project at anything phase of the software development. You may also work on a new project which involves the following steps:
- You will meet with the software developer to understand the nature of the application that the database will be supporting.
- You will plan and design the database with the application team and data modelers will come up with entity relationship diagrams (ERD) of tables based on the user requirements which you will review and approve before implementing.
- Once the system is designed, you will build and test it.
- You will meet with the system administrators to provision for a server that meets your requirements and they will build and configure the server and turn it over to you.
- You will then install the oracle software and then create the actual database which will be a blank database.
- After the database is created, you will run the DDL (data definition language) script provided by the developers to create the objects in the database.
- You will then load the database with data which will be provided to you by the application team.
- After the database is loaded, you will ask the application developers to test to see if they are able to connect to the database using the application. Of course, you would have provided them with a username/password , database name, connect string which they will use to establish connectivity to the database.
- You will manage the user accounts and schedule backups to run against this database.
- After a period of initial testing, the application will go live( meaning that it will be available for the business processes).
- You will maintain the database after this stage meaning you will take proactive steps so the data and application is available for use to the end users.
Creating and Managing Users
Every database has users, you will be responsible for creating these users based on requests submitted by the project team leads. You will be expected to give the users guidelines on appropriate use of their accounts and also implement database security policies within the database based on the company’s security guidelines. You will also ensure that users adhere to this database security policy by enforcing strict rules and giving them only the necessary privileges needed based on their job functions. It’s also the responsibility of the DBA to monitor the resource usage by individual users and to flag the heavy resource users.
User Accounts
When users are locked out of the database because their password expired or the entered an incorrect password a certain number of times determined by the password enforcement policy, you will be responsible for unlocking their accounts when they submit the request. Note: In order to access a database, a user has to connect through an application such as Oracle Siebel with a username and password that you would have assigned. To create a user, you must have the create user privilege system privilege; and this privilege should only be granted to database administrator. A user needs the create session privilege in order to connect to the database. The username must be unique in the database. A user and a role cannot have the same name. A user has its associated schema- where its objects (such as tables, view, sequences, synonyms, indexes and so forth) reside. All these objects must have a unique name within the schema. It is a good practice to assign a default tablespace when a user is created. A tablespace is a logical storage structure for objects in a database.
System Management
You should have an understanding how the entire system works (database, Unix/Linux server, network, storage etc.) daily monitoring is not limited to the database itself. You will have to monitor the performance of the servers that host the database and of the network that enables connections to the database. In my company if a user tells us that the database is slow, we ask the UNIX system administrators, network team and storage team to check the server, network or storage to see if they find anything usual such as slow responses while we are checking the database that is reported with the issue. Troubleshooting You will be responsible for troubleshooting the database to fix problems and involves knowing how to get the right kind of help from Oracle support personnel, and how to use other Oracle resources to fix problems quickly. You may get a call from a user that the database is down and then find out that the user had been locked out of their account. You can also get a call that a tablespace is full meaning that no more data can be added to it and they cannot run their processes. So you will have to increase the size of the tablespace. You could also get a call that an important month-end batch job failed and that all the user needs to do to fix the problem is to add a larger rollback segment to the database or analyze the tables to gather the statistics. If the system is so slow that work cannot be completed successfully, it may as well not be running. It may sometimes not be a database issue for example, a network problem or bad piece of application code could be the slow down the system and you may have to work with the application, UNIX, network and storage teams to resolve the issue.
Performance Tuning
Performance tuning should start early in the planning phase when tables and data flows are being designed and on to the implementation stage, the testing stage, and the production stage of a database. In simply means making things run faster for the Once the application is built, you usually can only add or remove indexes and tune SQL and PL/SQL code. Sometimes simply adding a missing index has made dramatic improvements for the end users. It is imperative therefore that you work very closely with the developers so that you can catch some poor design errors early on in the project.
Monitoring the System
Once a database is actually in production, you job will be monitor the system to ensure uninterrupted service. Some will perform tasks such as monitoring space to ensure it is sufficient for the system (if the database runs out of space, it will crash), checking that jobs run by the users are successful, monitoring the log files on a daily basis for any unusual activities. Note: DBAs are expected to be proactive and prevent avoidable downtime such as downtime due to a process running out of space. Estimating Requirements You will be required to choose an appropriate operation system which the database will run on for example UNIX or Linux. You will also be required to estimate the operating disk space and memory requirements for any new projects. You will also come up with growth estimates for the databases and also for planning future growth and potential changes in the applications (this is called capacity planning).
Developing Backup and Recovery Strategies
Adequate backups can prevent the catastrophic loss of an organization’s vital business data. You will be tasked with developing an appropriate backup and recovery strategy and test the backups for corruption. You will also develop a recovery strategy in case of a disaster. The best way to do this is to simulate several types of data loss by implementing, testing, and documenting the various backup and recovery scenarios. Regular testing of the backups and practicing recoveries is very critical in the event of a disaster. Loss of business data not only leads to immediate monetary damage in the form of lost revenue, but also cost your customers/users to lose trust in you. Unplanned database downtime reflects poorly on a company’s reputation. Because the data that resides in our database today is so important to the agencies or to the companies that we work for, the loss of that data is absolutely devastating to the economic well-being of that particular organization. So one of the most critical skills that a DBA can have today is the ability to recover data that is lost due to floods, electrical outages, disk crashes, hard ware failure, operating system issues, human error, corruption, etc. Every company that I know of today has a backup plan and a backup schedule for their databases. They usually take full backup at least once a week. And incremental backups every evening. So they vary the full and the incremental based on the needs that they have. But it’s important to have a regular backup schedule for your particular database. And it’s also important that you as a DBA be able to recover from that backup. So you want to be sure that you can test your backup plan and be sure that you can recover the data.
Overseeing Change Management
Remember that the database is there to support the business applications and these applications are currently getting tested to fix bugs, so these changes have to be implemented at the database level as well. Every application goes through changes overtime to improve features and fix bugs in the software. There is a constant cycle of development, testing, and implementation, and you will play an important role in that cycle. Change management is the process of properly migrating new code, and you will need to understand the process that’s in place in his or her organization. It is your responsibility to ensure that all the latest changes to the database software are also evaluated and adopted. These so-called software patches are usually made available through Oracle support website.
Database Design
You may be involved in a new project from the beginning to the implementation(meaning when you create the objects and load the database) phase and this will require that you assist the data modelers with the design of the database. This may involve creating entity-relationship diagrams and suggesting dependencies and candidates for primary keys. Working with the application team during the design will eliminate a lotof issues in the long run as you would help the team make better design choices during the design phase and thereby improve the performance of the database down the road. Many database are slow due to poor design issues
Installing and Upgrading Software
You will be responsible for installing the Oracle software depending on your role; the UNIX system Administrator may also handle part of the installation process. In my shop, the system administrator is responsible for creating the oracle user and setting the memory parameters on the UNIX server and storage team will be responsible for providing the disks to house our database prior to actual installation. It is our responsibility to coordinate this with all the teams involved. Meaning that it is your responsibility to list all the memory and disk requirements so that the Oracle software and databases, as well as the system itself, can perform adequately.
Creating Databases
You will be responsible for the creation of databases based on the user requirements. For example a user may want a small database or a very large database of a certain size, and memory requirements that suits their needs. Based on your role, you may be required to plan the logical design of the database structures, such as creating the table spaces and creating the objects after the database is created. You will be required to work closely with the application team to come up with the proper sizing estimates for the database objects such as tables and indexes. Ensure that all the requirement is very clear, written down and approved by all team members before creating the database. Note: A tablespace is a logical structure and houses the data. The objects you create such as tables, indexes, views and so forth are stored on tablespaces.
Creating Database Objects
So you have created a database but there is no nothing in it. You will work with the developers to create the various objects. Such as tables, indexes, views, synonyms and so on. The developers will provide you with a script that contains the tables and indexes to be created which you will review with their team and make recommendations to improving the performance. Once the final script is approved by you. You will run it in the application schema which you would already have created within the database with the appropriate privileges. Note: Remember that the schema is a collection of the objects of a particular user. Schemas are created for each application that the database is supporting within the database and this is where all the objects will be created.
Loading Data
Now that you have created the database users, schemas, and objects (tables, indexes, view), you will now load the data. If the data loads need to be on a periodic basis, you will have to design, test and implement appropriate loading programs.
Non-Technical Responsibilities Oracle Expert
You would be considered the oracle expert, the go to person for solutions to user issues and recommendations. The majority of your users will have limited knowledge about the oracle database and its products, so it will be your job to educate them. Oracle Point of Contact You will be the oracle point of contact in your company. As the DBA you will recommend the level of Oracle support and make sure it is used by your organization. It is your job to make sure all the technical people in your organization (such as the developers and System Administrators) have access to online support services. When your user open a ticket with call Oracle Support to troubleshoot and issue with the database, it is your job to make sure they get the answers they need and to ensure that they get a solution.
Process Expert
You should understand the core business processes of the organization (the “how” and “why” of the business) because you have access to the data and application processes of so that you can weed out inefficient processes and optimize those processes that are efficient.

Types Of DBA's
There are several types of DBA especially in large companies.
- Application DBA
This person is responsible for a specific application(s) and all the corresponding database objects at the schema/user level. This DBA works closely with the developers and data modelers to assist with table definitions and schema creation and also focuses on tuning a particular application by adding indexes or tuning SQL and PL/SQL. Ultimately this person becomes an expert on the application and database objects involved. It is common to assign new DBAs to this position initially. Note: A schema is just a collection of objects owned by a user.
- Systems DBA
This type of DBA manages the database at the database level. Specifically, makes sure the actual database is running, backups are implemented, and everything is interfacing well with the other systems (such as the OS). This DBA works very closely with the System Administrator(s) to ensure that the total system is available and secure. While not every shop has someone assigned as an Application DBA, every shop does have someone fulfilling the tasks of the Systems DBA.
- Maintenance DBA
This is DBA supports pre-existing systems. There usually isn’t much new development on these systems, just making sure they are available as needed. This type of work can involve converting old systems (such as SQL Server to Oracle), doing upgrades to a newer version of the oracle database, applying patches etc. In my company I am both systems DBA and Maintenance DBA and do some Application DBA tasks. As I mentioned earlier to you, our users are the Application DBAs. Often, a DBA is a combination of all three types especially in smaller to mid-size shops; a DBA will be expected to do everything.
Note: The Application DBA supports the applications and the developers, the Maintenance DBA maintains and upgrades existing systems and the System DBA, manages all the databases as a total system.

6 Steps To Your DBA Success
Overview
Now that you have read the role and responsibilities of an Oracle DBA, reviewed the pay-scale and watched the "how to set and achieve goals videos"; you are ready to decide how much you can earn starting out as a DBA.
You call the shots.
If you feel your heart beat racing, know that it is normal behavior.
In this unit, we will teach you how to define, decide, plan and achieve your DBA goal using the 6 principles of success taught by Napoleon Hill in his classic book called "Think and Grow Rich".
We will tailor these 6 principles towards achieving your DBA goal.
Are you ready to get started?
Let's go!
Next
Step 1: Decide Exactly How Much You Want
Now that you have reviewed the payscale of Oracle DBA's, you can now decide how much you think you deserve to earn starting out as a DBA.
Grab a sheet of paper and write down how much you want to earn as an oracle DBA.
Do not over think it, pick a number you know you deserve. It does not matter how BIG it may seem to you right now... (How much is enough for you?)
Be sure to be very specific...for example..I will like to earn $100,000.
Write down the amount NOW.
And then watch the video below.
After you have finished watching the video. Download, print out and complete the worksheet below.

Step 2: Determine Exactly What you Intend To Give Up
In step 1, you decided how much money you wanted to earn as an oracke DBA right?
Now what?
What do you have to do or stop doing to help yourself on this journey?
You have to determine what you need to give up/do to get the results you want? For example
- Schedule and lock in two to three hours of study a day into your calendar and set reminders.
- No TV on your off days so you can focus on your studies.
- Create a calendar for study time and guard that time with your life.
- Complete all your assignments when they are due.
- Participate in the class forum.
- Collaborate with other DBAs.
- Practice, practice and practice in the database lab which will be made available to you.

Step 3: Establish A Definite Date
In Step 1, you have decided exactly how much money you want to earn as a DBA, and Step 2, you have determined what you will give up to achieve this goal.
Now in Step 3, you are going to decide on a DATE that you will get your first DBA job.
When you set a goal, you have to guess at a time that you feel you can accomplish it. Do not over think it. Just go with your gut feeling.
Why is this so important you may be asking yourself?
"Work Expands to fill the time allotted for it" - Parkinson's law
If you pick a shorter date and then take action steps daily, you will notice that your thoughts and actions will align and you will focus on your daily action steps to move you towards the direction of your goal quicker than if you gave yourself a longer time.
"Focus increases amplitude of vibration"
"The only thing that grows is the thing you give energy to it" -Emerson

Step 4: Create A Plan And Get Moving In That Direction
Lets go back over the first three steps:
- Step 1- Decide on the amount of money you want to earn as an Oracle DBA.
- Step 2 - Determine exactly what you intend to give/give up to get what you want.
- Step 3 - Establish a definite date that you want to become an oracle DBA.
Are you ready for the NEXT step?
Oh YES YOU ARE!!!
Step 4: Create a Plan for accomplishing your goal and get moving in that direction.
And begin at once whether you are ready or not to put the plan into action.
You have already taken a giant step by signing up for the academy
What Can You Do Today To Move You In The Direction Of Your Goal?
Write the list down and move into action :-)
When Sir, Walter Raleigh, who built a tobacco empire was asked how he accomplished so much in such a short period of time...He replied . " When there is anything to do, I start it."
Don’t look at a thing; Start it.
Don’t imagine that it is too difficult; Start it.
Don’t put it off for a day; Start it.
Don’t look for someone else to do it; Start it.
Don't pretend that you must think it over; Start it.
Don't start half-heartedly; put everything you can muster into your start.
It can't be done, but with a forceful start, you can do it.
Lets get to work.. What do you say?

Step 5: Write Out A Clear Concise Statement
The fifth step is the composite of All 4 steps.
Step 5: Write down a clear concise statement for the amount of money you intend to acquire as an Oracle DBA, state the date for its acquisition, state what you intend to give up/do to get your DBA job. Describe clearly the plan through which you intend to get your DBA job.
This will be written on your Goal Card. Be as specific as possible but very CONCISE.
It is the repetition of these ideas in your mind that enables you to internalize, believe in your ability to achieve this goal and thus taking the necessary actions steps to get you there.

Step 6: Read Your Written Statement
Read your written statement TWICE a day, once just before going to sleep at night and again immediately after waking up in the morning.
As you read, use your imagination to SEE , FEEL and BELIEVE yourself already working as an Oracle DBA and earning the money you decided on in step 1.
All this may seem ridiculous but it WORKS. I have done it and still carry my goal card and read it over and over again.
As you keep reading your goal card and seeing your self earning the money you desire as an ORACLE DBA, you will steadily build your desire.
It may be challenging at first but if you KEEP reading and visualizing yourself being, doing your daily DBA task in your company and joyfully serving your customers while earning the money you desire; you will notice that your daily habits will change to align with your goal and you will not even have to force yourself to put in the work you need.
The BELIEVE comes through the REPETITION of reading your goal card over and over again.
Any IDEA that you impress upon your mind over and over and over again, be it GOOD or BAD, you will start to BELIEVE IT.
And guess what?
When you start to BELIEVE it, your thoughts and actions ALIGN with it, and you will notice that the majority of your daily activities will be focused on the TASKS required to achieve your goals.
That's how you build DESIRE !!

Where Are You?
There are two important things you need to know if you want to experience great success. You have to know:
-
Where you are ?
You have got to look at your habit patterns: How do you live your days? How do you start your day? How do you spend your time? Where do you spend your time? How do you approach your daily tasks? How fulfilled are you about your life in general?
-
Where you are going?
Do you have a goal you are focused on a daily basis? Have you set a date to accomplish your goal? Are you monitoring your progress? Do you have a coach to assist you in achieving your goal? Do you have a list of actions steps? Are you acting on your list and checking off completed tasks as you move forward. Are you hanging out with like-minded people with a positive attitude? Do you feel good about your progress.
Write down answers to these questions to know where you are and then write down the changes you will make to take you where you want to go. Do it Now.

What Are Your Habit Patterns
Now, we are going to talk about HABITS. What are Habits? A habit is anything we do on auto-pilot (without giving it any thought). For example:
- Driving a car while texting. I know someone who drives his car hands- free or using his knees :-)
- Waking up at 5:00 a.m every morning without the use of your alarm clock to get ready for work.
- Drinking that big bottle of Heineken(s) even though you had sworn you were never going to take another sip of it on the days that you had your DBA class so that you could come to class feeling refreshed and alert. And then your buddy stops by your place to hang out bringing along a case of 24 bottles of Heinekens and your eyes light up when you see those little demons you had decided you were going to stay away from prior to class. Fast forward, three hours later, class has started and you are sprawled on your couch having fun and pumping one bottle after another into your belly; totally oblivious of the time and your goal card is nowhere to be found because you had conveniently pulled it out of your pocket and slipped it underneath your couch while you were having fun. And as you took yet another sip, you reminded yourself that it was going to be your last one...until you passed out full of alcohol..... Do you get the picture now......
I want you to make it a habit of reading your goal card twice a day and at the same time everyday. Think of one habit that you can change to move you towards your goal and start working on it today.

Pick An Idea And Play With It
If you can hold in in your head, you can hold in your hand - Stella Mann.
I want you to spend a few minutes thinking of an idea you want to focus on all day today. How about the idea of " earning $100K as an oracle DBA serving wonderful customers and adding great value to your company" :-) Write this idea down on a note card and carry it around with you all day.
Any idea that is held in the mind that is either feared or revered will, begin at once to clothe itself in the most convenient and appropriate physical forms available. - Andrew Carnegie
See how often you can hold this idea in your head all day long. You know, we are constantly getting bombarded all around us and all day with information from all over, for example, checking Facebook posts, phone calls, chatting with friends, family, coworkers, taking care of personal stuff, balancing family life and work, dealing with dramatic people etc. So, these ideas you are thinking about would easily get knocked out of you mind. Focus is the key to winning. The Eye of the Tiger.

Make Decisions Using The Four Step Process
This is probably one of the most important units in the entire DBA mindset course, maybe even our entire program and in your life as well. The topic of making decisions is very important in our lives but unfortunately it is not taught in schools or in any establishments like it should. In order to achieve any thing in life you have to make a decision. Now that is easier said than done because that means you must really understand what a decision is to be able to make one and you must really know how to go about making a decision. When you make a true decision to go after any goal you really desire, you cutting off all other possibilities. This means that you plan to succeed despite all the challenges that get thrown at you along the way. Most people decide to go after a goal, and then immediately start thinking of all the reasons what the goal is not achievable.
It's scary how our minds can tell us all this stories to keep us where we are because we are comfort creatures and do not like change unless we are in real pain. Whatever we focus on, gets bigger and bigger.
If you focus on how much study time and commitment is required to complete your academy courses, or how hard the course materials "seems" to be, then you need a Mindset Shift. Go back to module 2 and work through the exercises again. After you have decided on going after your goal and made a committed decision, you focus on your daily actions steps every day and monitor your process and adjust as you go along. You focus more on actions that are productive. A true decision and the right decision when done the right way usually changes our lives. Most of us will agree that life is a series of choices. The more good choices we make the better most likely our lives will be and vice versa. Unfortunately some of those hard choices are not usually easy because it requires us to go against our normal behavior, this are usually the choices that will yield the most positive results and great change in our lives. These choices will require you to make firm decision that will usually end up impacting a paradigm shift (change in unproductive old habits patterns) in your life. How do we go about making decisions? I learned the four point decision making process from my mentor Bob proctor which I will share below. There are a four questions you should always ask yourself before making any decision and if you become good at this and apply them as often as you can you will see some tremendous growth in your life .
- Do I WANT TO be, do or have this ?
- Will being, doing this or having this MOVE ME in the direction of my goal?
- Is being, doing this or having this in HARMONY with God's laws or the laws of the universe.
- Will being, doing this or having this violate the rights of others? This is how it works:If the answer to all the questions is YES , Let the goal go and move on to the next because anything that violates the rights of others, is usually NOT the right thing for you. If the answer to the first 3 questions are YES and the last one is NO, go ahead and make the decision and get moving in the direction of your goal.
These two quotes will be your assignments read them over and over again and come up with a small summary of what you think they mean:
Any idea that is held in the mind, that is emphasized, that is either feared or revered, will begin at once to cloth itself in the most convenient and appropriate form available -Andrew Carnegie You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete. - R. Buckminster Fuller

Act As If You Are Already An Oracle DBA
Live the part you want to grow into. Think of your goal of becoming a DBA and use your imagination to see yourself already a DBA and make up your mind that you are going to become the success you already ARE. You have to BELIEVE it before you can SEE it and BE it.
Act As IF - William James
Write down the type of DBA you are, how you dress to work every day, where you will live, how you treat your co-workers and user community, how you will troubleshoot DBA issues etc, how often you will interact with other DBA's..... Write this out, add to it and fine tune every day until you have a very clear written statement and keep reading it over and over again. How do I ACT AS IF? I hear you whispering..... You do that by reading your written statement over and over again, and acting like the person you want to become.

Your Goal Card
You already have your GOAL CARD right? Is it written in the present tense(as if it has already manifested)? Are you reading it twice daily? I know you ARE. Let me let you in on a secret....Are you ready? You goal card should be stuck LOOSELY in your pocket and not in your wallet. You know why? Have you heard the saying "OUT OF SIGHT, OUT OF MIND"..... Well, that's what is going to happen. You will forget all about it because your mind is constantly busy with all the things you have to do ...and when you add social media and TV to the mix....you can understand why your goal card may never feel any love from you :-) If your goal card is kept loosely in your pants/skirt pocket or in your purse, you are bound to reach into your pocket during the day and every time you touch your card, you will think about your goal. If you write goal and you keep reading it over and over again, you are going to start believing in it and when you start believing in your beautiful goal of becoming a wonderful DBA earning upper five figures or six figures while working from home or the hours you choose, your actions will start to change.
Believe and your believe will create the facts - William James

Discipline Yourself To Focus
Discipline is something that is consciously chosen, ardently desired and patiently persist in. - Bob Proctor
Have you ever wondered why you stay on track and accomplish some of your goals and for other goals, you give up before you even start? For the goals which you achieved, why did you achieve them? For the goals you gave up on, why did you not complete them? It is amazing how a strong desire to achieve an objective can move you into action without a shadow of doubt. Now Grab your goal card and read it out loud. Remember that you had written down your target date for accomplishing your goal of becoming a DBA. if you have been reading your goal card twice a day as suggested when you learnt the six steps to DBA success in module 2; you should notice that your habits have started to shift with more focus on studying for class, completing your assignments in a timely manner, seeking out and collaborating with other DBA's, playing with oracle on your computer at home etc. Now grab a paper and write down your Target Date: What are two things you can do today to move you towards your goal and target date.? Write these two things down NOW. How are you are going to apply discipline to accomplish the two tasks you wrote above? Write this down. Now get to work using the EYE OF THE TIGER.
